Emotional Wellness in Uncertain Times
By admin

Thrive Weekly Issue 24
Last week, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago declared a State of Emergency, a decision that stirred a wave of emotions across the country. From concern to frustration and fatigue, the responses have been as diverse as our people.
In moments like these, emotional wellness is not a luxury but a necessity. And while our focus today is on Trinidad and Tobago, let’s be clear, what we’re experiencing is part of a much larger global narrative. Emotional turbulence isn’t a “developing country” issue. It is, in fact, a human one.
Nervous System Response
Periods of uncertainty heighten emotional reactivity, reduce mental stamina, and push communities closer to the edge. When safety, whether physical or economic, feels threatened, emotional balance is the first to wobble. We may tell ourselves we’re “fine,” but our bodies often tell a different story.
Behind the scenes, the nervous system responds:
The brain’s amygdala goes on high alert, impairing our ability to think clearly, plan effectively, or respond compassionately.
- Cortisol levels rise
- Sleep becomes erratic
- Emotions feel heavier
Stress at Work

The impact of emotional strain isn’t just personal, but can show up in:
- Short tempers or withdrawal
- Reduced productivity
- Emotional detachment in relationships
And it takes a toll on the body:
- Immune system: Vulnerability to illness
- Nervous system: Constant fight-or-flight
- Cardiovascular system: Elevated heart rate, high blood pressure
- Brain: Fog, forgetfulness
Silent Stress in Children

Children may not fully understand a State of Emergency, but they feel everything.
When parents:
- Avoid talking about what’s happening
- Speak in anxious or aggressive tones
- Expose them to media overload
Children internalize stress often through behavior, sleep issues, or physical complaints.
5 Tools to Restore Calm & Clarity
1️⃣ Name It to Tame It
Acknowledge your emotions. Naming fear, anxiety, or sadness gives it structure and lowers its intensity.
2️⃣ Ground Your Body
Breathe deeply. Touch the earth. Stretch. Let your body know it’s safe.
3️⃣ Create a Calm Zone
Schedule 15 phone-free, news-free minutes daily. Silence is powerful.
4️⃣ Communicate Kindly
Reassure children with age-appropriate facts. Offer your listening ear to others without trying to fix them.
5️⃣ Control What You Can
Stick to a nourishing ritual like, for example, journaling, prayer, walking, or even preparing a meal to remind your brain that you’re still in control.

Let Hope Be Our Guide
What’s happening in Trinidad and Tobago is, I believe, a mirror of our planet’s wider unrest.
Across the world, people are facing the weight of economic change, political polarization, natural disasters, and cultural shifts. The earth itself is groaning with earthquakes, volcanoes, and more violent storms. The world order is shifting before our eyes.
But, even in the storm, the human spirit remains remarkably resilient. So, let us not meet this moment with fear, but with wisdom, choosing community over chaos, clarity over confusion, and, most of all, hope over despair.
We may not be able to control the winds of change, but we can adjust our sails with grace, courage, and care for each other.
