Just Miles Away: Thriving Emotionally When the World Feels Unsteady

Thrive Weekly Issue 30
Trinidad & Tobago is approximately seven to eight miles from Venezuela, and recent news of U.S. naval activity in those waters has many of us feeling uneasy. With nonstop headlines, social media updates, and conversations around town, stress can ripple through families…even reaching our children, sometimes quietly.
Strengthen What We Can Control

Even when global events feel dangerously close, emotional wellness isn’t out of reach. To thrive is about strengthening what we can control: our thoughts, our reactions, and our capacity for calm and compassion.
This week, we focus on navigating stress in real time…and with that, I mean protecting our peace of mind, guiding children through uncertainty, and embracing empathy toward our neighbors.
5 Thrive Tips for Emotional Wellness
1️⃣ Limit ‘Doomscrolling’: Choose one or two trusted news updates a day. Too much exposure can heighten anxiety.
2️⃣ Ground Yourself Daily: Simple mindfulness, deep breathing, or a short walk outdoors can anchor your mind and calm your nervous system.
3️⃣ Open Family Conversations: Children may overhear news they don’t fully understand. Talk with them calmly, answer questions honestly, and emphasize safety, hope, and family resilience.
4️⃣ Extend Empathy: Many Venezuelan neighbors in T&T are already part of our communities. Small acts of kindness and understanding reinforce compassion and reduce fear-based thinking.
5️⃣ Create a Calm Zone: Designate a space at home for quiet, reflection, or relaxation. Choose a place where you can reset your emotional state before reacting to external pressures.
A Culture of Service and Resilience
Protecting your emotional wellness isn’t just self-care—it’s family care, community care, and a practice of thriving no matter the headlines. This week, take one intentional step every day to nurture calm, serve with compassion, and walk in faith that you can face what comes with strength and grace.
