When Female Friendships Nourish The Soul

By admin

Thrive Weekly Issue 23

There are moments in every woman’s life that feel like deep, satisfying breaths. You know…the kind that settles your nervous system, soothes your spirit, and reminds you of who you are. That’s what happened to me this past weekend in Tobago.

Wired For Connection

My experience moved me so profoundly that I felt called to share with you not the details, of course, but the essence of what it taught me, especially as one who spends so much time alone. Maybe this might resonate with some of you, too.

The truth is…women need each other: not in a clichéd, bumper-sticker kind of way, but in a biological, emotional, and even spiritual way. We truly are wired for connection. And when that connection is safe, joyful, honest, and rooted in mutual appreciation, something extraordinary happens.

Laughter as Medicine

We heal. We laugh loud, unfiltered belly laughs that feel like medicine. We reflect and witness each other’s triumphs and insecurities without judgment. We offer support not out of obligation, but out of genuine delight in each other’s growth.

In the company of women like this, girlfriends who cheer you on, share a glass of wine at midnight just to revel in your wins, who help you backstage or meet you for a quiet, joyful breakfast after the curtain closes, you realize how sacred female friendship really is.

A Dance of Reciprocity and Respect

I believe that authentic female friendship isn’t transactional but a dance of reciprocity and respect, where each woman gets to shine and rest in equal measure.

When you are in the presence of amazing women like my friends Wendy, Terri, and Jenny, women grounded in who they are, who don’t compete, compare, or criticize, you can almost feel your nervous system respond positively. Your body relaxes, your heart opens, and your spirit expands. Friendships like these literally feed the brain and regulate the body. They remind us that love doesn’t always have to be romantic to be life-changing.

5 Benefits of Authentic Friendships

1️⃣ Boosts oxytocin (the “love hormone”) – helping us feel bonded, calm, and deeply supported.

2️⃣ Lowers cortisol (the stress hormone) – protecting us from burnout, overwhelm, and inflammation.

3️⃣ Strengthens emotional resilience to bounce back more quickly during stressful or uncertain times.

4️⃣ Improves memory and cognitive function – keeping our minds sharper and more focused, especially as we age.

5️⃣ Supports heart health and longevity – studies show that strong social ties can lower blood pressure, reduce risk of heart disease, and even extend our lifespan.

More importantly, these friendships remind us that we are never alone on the dance floor of life. So if you’re reading this, I invite you to reflect on the women who’ve made you feel most seen, most held, most alive. And if you haven’t experienced this in a while, may this be your nudge to seek it, cultivate it, or reignite it because every woman deserves a circle that celebrates her becoming.
